HARVILLE AND HELEN PRESENTATIONS WITH HAYLEY HOFFMAN
From Romantic to Real Love – All intimate relationships have three stages: the romantic phase, the power struggle, and real love. Most couples never get to stage three. The first two stages “happen” to us. The third stage happens only if it’s chosen. Couples often need our help understanding this transition and developing the skills of achieving it. In this session, you will learn how to help couples cross over into real love. You’ll discover how to:
- Use the three-stage model of romantic love to reorient couples away from blame and hopelessness toward the shared goal of cultivating real love
- Structure your sessions (from the very beginning of treatment) to help partners focus on their intentions, express appreciation, and take responsibility for their contribution to conflicts and power struggles
- Help couples talk about their differences without become polarized and antagonistic
- Shift each partner from an individualistic mindset, where their focus is on themselves, to a collectivistic mindset, where they’re collaborators nurturing their shared relationship
- Help your clients talk safely about any topic or issue using the three-step Imago Dialogue process
- Teach clients to give each other feedback noncritically, in a way that keeps the channels of communication open and allows them to take in what they’ve heard
- Integrate Imago principles into your work with both couples and individuals
